What Is Pelvic Floor  Physical Therapy?

The pelvic floor muscles lie at the base of the pelvis and support the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. These muscles coordinate with the spine, external pelvis and hips to provide stabilization with functional activities and are fundamental in maintaining bladder and bowel continence. They also play an important role in sexual function. Pelvic floor physical therapy addresses impairments in the pelvic floor muscles to assist with return to normal function.

What to Expect at Your Pelvic Health Therapy Evaluation

Pelvic health physical therapy starts with an initial evaluation. Just as no two people are alike, no two physical therapy evaluations are the same. The first visit may or may not include an external and/or internal assessment. Patient education specific to the pelvic floor, bladder, bowel, and sexual function is provided as it relates to the patient’s diagnosis and symptoms.

• Patients will receive confidential and professional communication to comfortably discuss their concerns and treatment goals.
• Patients are invited to pause or stop any part of a physical therapy session, as needed.
• Patients may attend physical therapy sessions while menstruating.
• Patients should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to allow for ease of movement. Part of the assessment may require exposure of the lower body and genital areas; proper draping will be provided.
• Patients may bring a friend or family member with them for comfort.
